April 2017

A busy time of the year but don't be too quick - frosts and winter squalls can catch you out.

Now is the time to lift and divide mint and chives and give your herb garden an overhaul. Comfrey can be planted for ground cover and fertiliser but beware - it grows big!

Towards the end of the month you can sow main crop carrots, salisfy and yes, start thinking about winter greens! Cabbage, broccoli and brusselsprouts can all be started off this month. Keep them protected against the cable root fly (it will munch any greens). Collars are best - either buy or make your own from using foam rubber carpet underlay, in 6 inch squares with a slight on one side to the centre. Just make sure the fit is snug, like a hat, around the stem.

At the end of the month, if you have a sheltered spot, you can sow some globe beetroot and endive - a nice change from usual lettuce.

Your scarecrow can come out now - don't forget the new hat for Spring
