This is an old cornish recipe from Mabel's Grandmother. They're easy to make and keep well in an airtight tin.



  1. Preheat your oven to Gas Mark 5 (375F or 190C)
  2. Grease a baking tray.
  3. Place the butter and sugar into a bowl and beat together with a wooden spoon.*
  4. Add all the remaining ingredients and stir hard with the the wooden spoon until everything is well mixed up.
  5. Divide the mixture into balls the size of a walnut. Place each ball onto the greased tray, remembering to leave a space between each ball.
  6. Press the balls down with a fork to make them flat and round.
  7. Cook for approximately 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. *Mabel perfers wooden spoons but you can use an electric mixer.
